The era of Rock Radio in New York Radio was over today as WXRK-FM changed formats. WXRK-FM was a rock station (92.3 K-Rock) & changed it to a Top 40 station (92.3 NOW FM). It was announced by CBS Radio (the owner) on March 10 2009, that 92.3 K-Rock will switch to a Top 40 Format. There was only 1 station before 92.3 NOW FM joined in. WHTZ, better known as Z-100, was a Top 40 station since Z-100's launch (August 2, 1983). WHTZ has recieved 5 million listeners each week & billed the station as "the BIGGEST Top 40 station in the country". 92.3 K-Rock came to an end @ 5 PM when it switched to 92.3 NOW FM. Before that, 92.3 K-Rock played it's last song as a Rock station (which was "Right Now" by Van Halen). It was followed with the sound of a clock ticking and a promo mentioning 92.3 NOW FM's direct competition with WHTZ (Z-100).
Then the sound of an ECG flatlining was heard. An introductory montage
was then played, followed by the launch of 92.3 NOW FM @ 5 PM with the
commitment to play "10,000 songs in a row, commercial free". The first
song played on "92.3 NOW FM" was Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow". 92.3 K-Rock is not dead, because 92.3 K-Rock is now on WXRK's HD2 subchannel. SportsRadio 66 WFAN in New York, will continue to be on WXRK's HD3 subchannel. Nik Carter, who was the host of the 10 AM-2 PM slot on the station, left when the station switched formats.
92.3 NOW FM joins a growing list of stations CBS Radio has launched
targeted to a younger demographic (Adults 18-34). On Friday, February
20, AMP Radio debuted in Los Angeles. Prior to that, CBS Radio
premiered Hot 95.7 in Houston, 101.5 Jamz in Phoenix & put B94 back on Pittsburgh Radio. 92.3 K-Rock is Dead & 92.3 NOW FM is Born.
PS, It's the station's 3rd identity change since
Howard Stern left for satellite radio, 3 years ago. CBS first tried
a talk format, then switched back to rock.
